Hundreds of millions of artists want to be distributed into Spotify and over 600 other online digital stores.
Apple Music, Spotify etc appointed tiers of aggregators to funnel and filter content distribution, creating a massive industry structure.
TIER 1 - INGROOVES, THE ORCHARD, E-ONE
LEVEL: FOR MAJOR LABELS, WITH SUB LABELS and THOUSANDS OF ARTISTS
Theses major distributors are above companies like the CD Baby and Tune Cores of the world.
Having been down this path, the only way you are (usually) signing with INGROOVES, E-ONE or THE ORCHARD is if you have hundreds or thousands of artists OR more realistically, you are a major label with dozens to hundreds of labels with hundreds of thousands of releases and they will have to accept your label to join.
So if you are the size of TUNECORE with lots of labels and artists you can sign to one of the major distributors like INGROOVES or THE ORCHARD. Depending on their stipulations and standards of bringing you on. If not then you have to sign to the Tier 2 aggregators.
TIER 2 - TUNECORE, CD-BABY, DITTO, etc
This is an aggregator alongside the level of TUNECORE that allows labels to become their own digital aggregator. Tier 2 aggregator doesn't have the arm reach as tier 1 distributors have, tier 2 distributors distribute to around 150 - 200 outlets, while major distributors distributes to 400-600 outlets.
